An Art Collaboration of VSU and WKU
September 14 – October 16, 2015
The Department of Art & Design at Virginia State University presents ReMaking Language: An Art Collaboration of VSU and WKU in the Meredith Art Gallery from September 14 through October 16. Consisting of over fifty abstract paintings, the exhibition showcases collaborative work from graphic design students at Virginia State University and painting students at Western Kentucky University produced during the fall semester of 2014.
Coordinated by Meena Khalili (Assistant Professor, Graphic Design, VSU) and Brent Dedas (Assistant Professor, Art, WKU), the collaboration involved the VSU graphic design students developing designs of ‘new’ letters and painting them on to sheets of watercolor paper. The designs were then shipped to the painting students at WKU who added layers of color through overlaid stencils. The process was repeated through two more series of layers by VSU and then WKU students. The resulting paintings are stunning abstract designs highlighting color combinations and sequencing, with bits of letterforms recognizable amongst the patterns.
The Meredith Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Harris Hall on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg. Please call (804) 524-5944 for directions and hours.
